The current inheritors of Britain’s carving heritage, The Master Carvers’ Association - professional carvers elected to membership by peer review - are paying their own tribute to Thomas Chippendale as part of the tercentenary celebrations of his baptism in 2018.
A suite of music stands has been individually designed, carved and made by members for exhibition and recital performances. Like Chippendale’s furniture these music stands are both functional and sculptural objects. As with all endeavour, “We learn from the past, create for the future.” Opening on June 5 with a gala recital at Luke Hughes’ Furniture Design Studios in London, the music stands will tour to Burton Constable in Yorkshire and The Leeds International Piano Competition, with other venues to be confirmed. Burton Constable will display historic music manuscripts on the stands dispersed throughout the historic rooms, The Leeds International Piano Competition has plans for an exhibition, “Beyond the Competition.” Recitals are planned at all venues.
