Lecture by Dr Adam Bowett, Chairman of the Chippendale Society

Dr Adam Bowett discusses the sources and types of woods used in Chippendale’s furniture, demonstrating how Britain’s growing colonial empire provided the raw materials for his business. He also discusses the impact of these different woods on the design, construction and appearance of the furniture, including Chippendale’s neo-Classical marquetry masterpieces of the 1770s.

With optional pre-lecture specialist tour of Paxton House and lunch. The tour will commence at 10.30am.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
No. 32 'Hutton' Bus from Berwick Upon Tweed operated by Perrymans, departs daily (except Sundays  from outside The Castle Hotel, next to Berwick train station and comes into the car park at Paxton. Mainline rail station at Berwick Upon Tweed. Only three miles from this station to Paxton by car/bus/taxi.

Car park in grounds next to house with disabled access spaces and spaces for coaches. Coaches please phone in advance to ensure availability of space.
