Specialist Chippendale marquetry talks at Newby Hall from local expert Jack Metcalfe.
Jack Metcalfe will be holding one-hour talks during September in the Tapestry Room at Newby Hall. The dates and times are as follows:
Thursdays 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th all from 11.00am to 12.00 noon
Saturdays 8th, 15th, and 29th all from 11.00am to 12.00 noon
In addition to seeing Chippendale’s upholstered furniture and the Gobelin Tapestries made for Newby Hall, the talk will embrace four of Chippendale’s most famous marquetry pieces, including two replicas: Diana & Minerva Commode and the Pier Table made initially for the Circular Dressing Room at Harewood House.
Jack will cover the materials, tools and techniques he used to shape and colour the replicas. This is a unique opportunity to see Chippendale’s polychromatic dyed marquetry work, as it looked when first delivered in the mid-18th Century.
Admission to the talk is included with Gardens entry – £12.50 – with places strictly limited. This does not include access to the rest of the House.
