Led by expert furniture historian – Professor David Jones, co-curator of The Paxton Style exhibition – this study day will examine one of the world's largest collections of furniture by Thomas Chippendale the Elder and Younger as supplied to Paxton House between 1774 and 1791. Areas such as furniture type, technical construction, ornament and timber finishes will be covered in detail with hands-on analysis and examination of transcribed invoices and archives.

Maximum of 20 participants.  Tickets cost £49 including lunch, or £39 for students.

The repertoire of over one hundred items executed in a uniquely restrained manner for owner Ninian Home, using the best quality Jamaican mahogany, established what has become known as ‘the Paxton Style’. Plus analysis of the little-known suites of furniture provided by Thomas Chippendale Junior for both Paxton and the Home family’s town house in Gower Street, London, between 1779 and 1791. Chippendale the Younger collaborated with his father and the firm’s business partners to create a large number of pieces that represent an intriguing transition between the generations, before launching his own particular brand of French-inspired neoclassicism at Paxton.
